Los resultados se publican en Environmental Pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab<strong>La proporci\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos<\/strong>&nbsp;en nuestras muestras vari\u00f3 entre 14 y 209 part\u00edculas por 1.000 gramos de sedimento seco. La ocurrencia m\u00e1s frecuente de micropl\u00e1sticos se registr\u00f3 en una de las estaciones de muestreo m\u00e1s profundas en la fosa de las Kuriles\u00bb, explica Abel. Las ocho muestras proced\u00edan de cuatro estaciones a profundidades de 5143, 6065, 7138 y 8255 metros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abAparentemente, una cantidad significativamente mayor de micropl\u00e1sticos se acumula en las regiones m\u00e1s profundas. Esto probablemente se deba al hecho de que las part\u00edculas pueden ser transportadas f\u00e1cilmente a estas \u00e1reas pero luego son atrapadas all\u00ed. Estas fosas act\u00faan como verdaderas trampas de pl\u00e1stico\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En general, el equipo de investigaci\u00f3n identific\u00f3&nbsp;<strong>15 tipos diferentes de pl\u00e1sticos en las muestras<\/strong>. Todos los sedimentos conten\u00edan polipropileno, un pl\u00e1stico est\u00e1ndar com\u00fanmente utilizado en materiales de embalaje. Adem\u00e1s, el 75 por ciento de las muestras conten\u00edan polietileno y aproximadamente el 63 por ciento conten\u00eda poli\u00e9ster. \u00abTodas las part\u00edculas micropl\u00e1sticas mostraron tama\u00f1os por debajo de 375 micr\u00f3metros, y la gran mayor\u00eda eran menores de 125 micr\u00f3metros, es decir, alrededor de un octavo de mil\u00edmetro\u00bb, agrega la investigadora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos pudieron descubrir las diminutas part\u00edculas de micropl\u00e1stico mediante el m\u00e9todo denominado Micro-FTIR, una variante especial de un espectr\u00f3metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abNo sabemos exactamente cu\u00e1nto pl\u00e1stico hay presente en las profundidades marinas; sin embargo, nuestros resultados muestran que las trincheras en el fondo del oc\u00e9ano, en particular, pueden servir como sumideros de pl\u00e1stico. Las estimaciones globales de&nbsp;<strong>la incidencia de micropl\u00e1sticos<\/strong>&nbsp;en nuestros oc\u00e9anos indican que debe haber una parte que exista fuera de la columna de agua y no figura en estas estimaciones. La acumulaci\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos en estas \u00e1reas podr\u00eda representar esta parte \u2018faltante\u2019\u00bb, concluye Brandt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abLos micropl\u00e1sticos en las profundidades marinas tambi\u00e9n significan que la base de la cadena alimentaria se ve afectada, ya que muchos invertebrados se alimentan de sedimentos, incluidas las part\u00edculas micropl\u00e1sticas.
